In Aarhus, Denmark
Bunshin Robot Cafe Øens Madhus
To Open in April 2025 in Aarhus, Denmark

OryLab, in collaboration with the Municipality of Aarhus,
is launching the first international Bunshin Robot Café in Aarhus, Denmark:
“Bunshin Robot Cafe Øens Madhus” on April 2, 2025
Empowering and enabling local OriHime pilots through telework.

The "Bunshin Robot Café" is a café where people who are unable to go outside due to illness or disability remotely operate the robot, OriHime, to serve customers. Following the success of the robot-assisted telework café in Tokyo, this initiative is now expanding internationally for the first time in Aarhus, DK.
In this new initiative, individuals living in Denmark who have difficulty going outside will be trained as local pilots and with the Japanese pilots they will participate in a new remote work experiment, working as a team that transcends national borders.

We call this type of relationship building technology "RelationTech" and aim to realize new forms of social participation for people.

We invite you to come experience the "possibilities of tele work" that are being created.

Background story
OryLab has been engaged in academic exchange and joint research with Danish universities using the bunshin robot OriHime since 2016. These efforts have now culminated in the opening of the first bunshin robot café in Aarhus, Denmark. Since the launch of our first bunshin robot café in 2021, we have welcomed many visitors from Denmark, including representatives from the Danish Embassy in Tokyo and delegations from several municipalities, whom all have shown a great interest in getting the system to Denmark.

Denmark was selected as the location for the first overseas café due to its reputation as a global leader in welfare and its advanced use of technology in the care sector. The country consistently ranks high in the World Happiness Report and is known for its strong social welfare system, inclusive working environments, and culture of active social participation. The Danish concept of "hygge," which celebrates small, everyday joys and meaningful human connections, aligns closely with OryLab’s mission to reduce loneliness through technology. We believe there is much to learn from Denmark’s societal values, environment and methods.

As part of this overseas expansion, individuals in Aarhus who face mobility challenges and have limited opportunities for social participation are hired. They will receive training as OriHime pilots, supported by OryLabs experienced pilots from the café in Japan. Our goal is to create a café that becomes a cherished part of the Aarhus community — a place where people can experience a new, inclusive way of working through avatar robots, fostering a sense of collegiality that transcends physical distance.

About OryLab Inc.
Founded on the idea of "solving loneliness," the company conducts research and development of relation technology to achieve this goal. Their flagship product is the bunshin robot "OriHime," which can be remotely operated while sharing a sense of presence as if the operator were physically there. The company develops, manufactures and sells OriHime.
In addition to OriHime, they have released other products:
  1. "OriHime-D": An avatar robot enabling physical social participation through telework.
  2. "OriHime eye+Switch": A communication device that allows people with severe disabilities to communicate using minimal eye or finger movements.
In June 2021, they opened their first permanent experimental "Avatar Robot Cafe DAWN ver.β" in Nihonbashi, where OriHime robots provide service. In 2023, they launched "FLEMEE," a telework-focused employment support service for people with disabilities.

The Avatar Robot Café DAWN ver.β is participating in the Cabinet Office/Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) Moonshot R&D Program Goal 1, "Cybernetic Avatar Technology and Social System Design for Harmonious Co-experience and Collective Ability (Project Cybernetic being)," thus promoting this initiative in collaboration with the Moonshot project.
Yoshifuji Ory at OryLab Inc.
His own experience of not being able to go to school, eventually becoming a "hikikomori" for three and a half years, created the deep desire to "rid the world of loneliness". At 17 he started his research into how this life goal could be achieved.
All this came to fruition in 2010, when the notion of creating a secondary body came to be, the bunshin robot OriHime, which allows the users to participate freely in society. After we started research into where the OriHime could serve its purpose, we began working with people who suffer from severely debilitating diseases and conditions, such as spinal cord injuries, ALS, MS patients and more. We see them as our seniors in life who can teach us about the challenges of being bedridden and thus creating viable solutions in how to continue participating in society.

In 2016, together with his good friend and secretary, the now late Yuta Banda, the company started looking into a new system using the OriHime for "customer service and physical labor".
Leading to the creation of the OriHime-D and consequent execution of the "1st Bunshin Robot Cafe" in 2018. We opened our permanent incubation cafe "Avatar Robot Cafe DAWN ver. B" in 2021 at Nihonbashi, Tokyo. in addition to running the cafe, experiments are conducted together with various companies and local governments, to continuously expand the scope of where and how to use OriHime towards a future where " Bedridden people can regain independence".
